Tom Fontana has returned to NBC’s midseason drama The Philanthropist after the exit of David Eick, who will be busy with the Battlestar Galactica spinoff Caprica.
Fontana (Oz, Homicide: Life on the Street) exited the series–about a renegade billionaire who travels the world using his wealth, connections and power to help people in need–in April, reportedly because he wanted to make a grittier, more authentic show than the network was looking for.
NBC has ordered eight episodes (down from its original order of 13) of the global adventure series, which is currently being shot overseas in London, the Czech Republic and South Africa.
The Philanthropist stars James Purefoy, Jesse L. Martin and Neve Campbell. Charlie Corwin, who originated the project, also exec produces, along with Peter Horton, who will continue as showrunner.
