Smash and Street Get Benched on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Ausiello is reporting that two Friday Night Lights‘ castmembers, Gaius Charles (Smash Williams) and Scott Porter (Jason Street), will only appear on a recurring basis when the show returns on DirecTV for its third season.

According to executive producer Jason Katims, “Both of their characters have now graduated and in the creative spirit of the show, we have decided to give them powerful four episode arcs that will observe their characters as they launch themselves into the next phase of their lives. We certainly will keep the door open for both actors to return in the future, depending on the actors’ availabilities.”

I’m a little sad to say goodbye to Smash, but it will frankly be a relief to see the end of Jason’s miracle pregnancy storyline. And some of the problems with the show’s scattershot season two seemed to derive from the difficulty of servicing such a large ensemble. Here’s hoping a streamlined cast will make for a tighter season when the show returns.
