DOCTOR WHO Leads Hugo Noms

The nominations for the 2007 Hugo Awards–given annually by members of the World Science Fiction Convention for the best science fiction or fantasy works–have been announced, and the Doctor Who/Torchwood franchise is leading the short form dramatic presentation category with three nominations.

Worldcon members recognized the Doctor Who episodes “Blink” and “Human Nature” and the Torchwood episode “Captain Jack Harkness,” as well as the Battlestar Galactica TV movie “Razor” and the fan-created Star Trek New Voyages episode “World Enough and Time.”

And in an unusual move this year, the entire first season of Heroes has been nominated in the long form dramatic presentation category, which is usually reserved for feature-length films. Heroes is up against a slate of fantasy films, including Enchanted, The Golden Compass, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Stardust.

  1. this is doc from the itunes podcast: Heroes of Science Fiction and Fantasy. I second the vote for Battlestar Galactica’s “Razor” and Torchwood. Watched 8 episodes of season 2 of Torchwood and am very happy with it. BSG “Razor” is a cut above and should win hands down. This is simply great Sci-fi. website voicemail 1-206-333-1297

  2. I have a hard time reading down to the nominees because I’m afraid if my eyes drift too far I’ll get blinked. 🙂

It is a treat to be able to exclude things from this list–there’s so much decent sci-fi available we can’t accommodate it all. That feels like a small miracle.

  3. Blink is the one to beat. Everything has paled in comparison to that masterpiece, including BSG. Part of me will giggle if the fan film gets the win, and I won’t complain if Human Nature takes it instead, but Blink was the superior show of all those nominated. (I loved Torchwood, but they didn’t nominate their best episode; that should have been “Random Shoes”).

  4. Actually, if I were voting, I’d give it hands down to “Captain Jack Harkness” of Torchwood. I thought “Blink” was a good episode but I don’t understand all the fuss about it. I can think of far better Doctor Who episodes of the new series which didn’t get nominated.
